En ocasiones hay películas que por diseño deben contemplarse como una viñeta suspendida en el tiempo, no hay historias intrigantes o giros de tuerca mágicos, simplemente son el retrato de momentos de la vida de cualquiera, es como si de pronto descubrieras que durante los últimos tres días alguien estuvo filmando un pequeño momento de tu vida.
The Florida Project (Projecto Florida, 2017) es una de esas historias de cotidianidad, enfocada en la pobreza, en sueños rotos, pero sobre todo en a la profunda inocencia de una niña muy traviesa.
Sean Baker escribe y dirige esta sencilla historia, -este director no lo debemos perder de vista, su película Tangerine de 2015 sobre dos prostitutas transexuales en Miami fue deliciosa, (además de haber sido grabada en tu totalidad con 2 iphones 5)- y en esta ocasión, con Proyecto Florida no decepciona.
La historia nos narra la vida de Moonee (Brooklynn Prince, de tan sólo 8 años de edad y ya toda una actriz sorprendente) quien vive junto con su madre Halley en unos pintorescos cuartos de motel en Orlando, literal a pasos de Disneyland.
Halley (Bria Vinaite) ama profundamente a su hija (y en realidad lo muestra durante toda la película), pero es una madre soltera que vive al día, vendiendo perfumes o incluso intercambiando favores sexuales; por otro lado, Bobby (Willem Dafoe, quien recibió una merecida nominación al Oscar por este papel) es el administrador del motel, una especia de figura protectora que se toma su trabajo muy en serio y es ejemplo de temple y una paciencia muy particular.

La cámara casi nunca se separa de Moonee, quien en compañía de sus dos mejores amigos, se dedica a hacer travesuras y comer helado, pero todo adquiere un tono diferente cuando en una de sus travesuras queman un complejo de apartamentos abandonados.
La película nunca juzga a sus personajes ni pretende darnos lecciones de moral, no hay un discurso ni una doble agenda, lo que vamos a ver es el amor de una madre por su hija y de una niña que está a segundos de perder la tan preciada inocencia. Se nota la mano de Sean Baker quien ya nos demostró que tiene una gran predilección por contar historias de los verdaderamente marginados.
El final de la película es pavoroso, no porque sea sangriento o violento, sino porque retrata en pantalla la realidad de los sueños rotos, el instante donde cualquier niño solo quisiera correr hacia el “lugar más feliz de la tierra”.
Totalmente recomendable para todos aquellos que quieren ver una historia sencilla, limpia y con excelentes actuaciones. Aunque su ritmo pausado tal vez no es para todos, la película pega desde el momento en el que te hace saber con contundente certeza que tan cerca de Disney viven niños que todos los días pierden su inocencia, niños que nunca vivirán la magia.
Concluyendo, la película me motivó a tratar de recordar cuándo fue el momento en que perdí la inocencia. Tristemente no me acuerdo, ¿ustedes?
